Works on sarees
When you go to the market to shop for a saree, you find so many different types of works done on them that you surely get confused. It is so difficult to know all those types of works. It would be very convenient if you knew exactly what kind of works on sarees are done so that you can make an informed choice.
Embroidery –
Zardosi embroidery – In the Zardosi embroidery, gold and silver thread is used for decoration. Sometimes even pearls and stones are used to add glamour to the saree. Nowadays, imitation of Zardosi embroidery is also available in the market in lesser prices. It uses synthetic metallic thread and false stones.
Kantha embroidery – Kantha embroidery uses subtle color which match with the base color of the saree. This type of embroidery is typical of Bengal, and is mostly done on cotton or tussar silk sarees.
Resham thread work – Resham means silk. Embroidery is done with colored silk thread on sarees. This work is most popular throughout India.
Brocade work – In Brocade work, threads of different colors are weft and woven into the fabric of the saree, making intricate patterns on the fabric. Benaras brocades are woven on silk sarees with the use of metal threads.
Sequin work – Sequins are tiny beads, which are woven into the fabric to make patterns. Shiny sequin work is mostly done to outline designs or to make the saree more decoarative.
Punkra or Punchra work – Punkra work is also known as Punchra work. In this type of work, the weft is removed and warp threads are knotted to make intricate designs.
Beads or precious stones – The use of beads and precious stones on sarees is done to bring novelty to it. Obviously, the prices also increase with it. This type of work is mostly done along with some other work like embroidery or zari work.
Kundan work – The setting of various colors of gems and stones is called kundan work. It is also used in jewellery. Red, green and white are the basic colored stones which are used in kundan work.
Mirror work – Small mirrors are cut in different shapes such as triangle, rectangular, round etc. These are then stuck to the saree to lend it glitter.
Cutwork – In cutwork, small open areas are left, sometimes with connecting threads. There are many types of cutworks such as Spanish cutwork, Venetian cutwork, Renaissance cutwork etc.
Applique work – This work is mostly done in Orissa and Rajasthan. In the Applique work, a piece of cloth is sewn over another to make various designs.
Fabric painting – When doing fabric painting on sarees, acrylic based colors are used to make motifs. Cloths like silk and cotton are preferred over other fabrics to do fabric painting. It is also done on bedcovers, curtains, pillow cases etc.
Zardosi work – Zardosi work is mostly done on satin, velvet and other heavy fabrics. Golden threads are used with metal wire embroidery to make patterns on the saree. In earlier times, real gold thread was used instead of metal threads.
Lucknow work – Lucknow work is popularly called Chikan work. In this type of work, stitches are used in a variety of ways to form different patterns. The work is done on the back side of the cloth so that the stitches are formed at the front.
Lace – Lace is also used in sarees, mostly to form the border. Lace can be stitched onto the sides of the saree to create a border.
Crystal work – Crystals of different shapes and sizes are also used in sarees
