It was one thing I dreaded. Wrapping up the 6-yard long cloth over your body must be suffocating. I would look terribly old-fashioned in it. God! Who made this our traditional dress?
These were my thoughts when I didn’t know anything about the saree except that my mother wore it. One day I sat on my computer and searched. I read through hundreds of pages on sarees and slowly the light of knowledge lit and I got bathed in its beauty.
A saree can give you a modern look. You will say that you have SEEN it in many of StarPlus serials. Well, not exactly. You have seen all glitter and no style. Let me show it to you through words.
1. Let us begin with ‘Modern Style’.
In this style, you begin by draping the saree around your lower body as in the ulta palla. Make pleats in the front. Now take the loose end of the saree and shorten its width by tucking in more cloth into your waistline so that your border comes above the lower border.
Take one whole round like this. Now you will have three spirals. Take care that they are given equal spacing. Bring the palla from the back to over your right shoulder. Now take the loose end of the palla over to your left shoulder, making a V in the front. That’s style for you.
2. The next one is christened ‘Butterfly Style’.
In ‘Butterfly Style’ too, we drape the saree as in the ulta palla. Make narrow pleats in the front. Bring the saree from under your left shoulder and also from under your right shoulder. Wrap it around your bust tightly. Pin it up at the back of the blouse so that it stays in place. Hold the border of the saree from center bottom and bring it up. Pleats will be formed automatically. Now take the pallu from the behind and bring it over to your right shoulder and pin it up.
3. Follow fashion with ‘Trendy Style.’
What you need to do is to wrap the saree once around your waist like in the ulta palla. Make pleats in the middle and tuck them inside. Now bring the palla from under your left shoulder and from under your right shoulder. Wrap it around your bust tightly. Now, bring the palla over to your right shoulder. Pin it up. You can either make pleats on the palla or let it fall freely.
4.“Saree with Chunni’ is another exciting style.
Now you don’t need to buy a ghagra. Turn a saree into a ghagra. Take a look.
Wrap the fabric around your waist once. Make narrow pleats at about 2 inches away from each other so that you get a ghagra look. Keep making narrow pleats all around. Take care that the palla covers the whole of the back. Make narrow pleats on the palla two inches apart and drape it from your left hip to your right hip from the back. Take a stole or a dupatta matching or contrasting with the color of the saree. Wrap it around your neck like a muffler or let it hang on your arms.
.
5. ‘Stylish Look’ – Make a style statement
What you need to do here is to wrap the saree once around your waist. After reaching the middle of your waistline, make broad pleats on the palla. You need to take a long palla for this style. Now put it on your right shoulder and pin it up. Take the free end of the saree and bring it onto the left shoulder from behind. There should be a fall at the back. Pin it up. You can also bring the two borders of the saree together forming a V in the front.
6. The ‘Designer’s Dream’ will make you say ‘Wow’.
Well, others will say it too when they see you in it. Here is how you drape the ‘Designer’s Dream’.
Wrap around the saree once around your waist just like in the ulta palla. Make pleats and tuck them up in the front. Now take out around 25 inches of palla. Tuck a small part of the palla you have taken out into your left hip, just to mark it out. Now leave the rest of the saree and adjust the palla on your left shoulder. Hold the border which is coming over your bust and tuck it inside the left side of your blouse, making narrow pleats. Now bring the loose end of the palla from under your left arm. Take it from over your left shoulder and carry it over to your right shoulder. It will now cover your neck. Now bring it from under your right shoulder and tuck the border into the right side of your blouse. Don’t forget to make narrow pleats. If the sari is slippery, then you can pin it up from the inside.
7. Celebrity Style – Just what you deserve
In the Celebrity Style, you wrap the saree just like in the ulta palla. The only difference is that you wear trousers instead of a petticoat. This way the sari drapes around more snugly. Wrap the saree once around your waist. Make narrow pleats and tuck them inside your waistline. Now bring the palla from the back to the front over to your left shoulder. Now make narrow pleats on the palla. (Pause) Bring the palla from over your right shoulder and put it behind your left shoulder. This style is good for winters, as it keeps away the cold by covering the neck. For this style, light saree materials are best. An embroidered saree and blouse will look very good for this style.
