Sarees From All Over India
India is so diverse in language, religion, geography and culture that you cannot imagine one dress for all the Indians. Yes, I am talking about the saree.
It is one cloth, but worn in different states differently. Every state of India has a unique way of dressing. Let us journey through all styles India has to offer -
Punjab
Punjabi women mostly prefer sarees with a heavy palla. They ususally wear bright colors and there is much glitter in their sarees. Their sarees depict their mood of vitality, festivity and zest for life.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is well known for its Jamdani weave. The patterns of this weave are almost invisibable when seen from a distance. This is because the base color and the color of the thread used are the same. These sarees are very expensive because of its highly intricate patterns and an exhausting process of making it.
East Bengal
East Bengal is famous for its Dacca weaves. This saree has different colored threads intricately woven on white cotton.
Maharashtra
In Maharashtran sarees, mostly zari thread is used to decorate the saree. Colored threads are used to make different patterns. Usually the pallu is filled with intricate patterns, and of course, the border too.
Assam
Sarees in Assam has two parts - mekhela and chadoer. These sarees have complex weaving and dense decoration. Although sarees are not commonly worn in Assam, yet at weddings and formal ocassions, Assamese women wear sarees.
Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, block printing is used to decorate sarees, dupattas, salwar kurtas etc. Mostly vegetable colors are used to make dyes for block printing. The various colors are harmonized in a Rajasthani design, which bestows it its beauty.
Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, silk thread is used to make different kinds of patterns on the palla and the border. Small designs are also woven all over the saree with the same color of threads.
Andhra Pradesh
Mostly cotton sarees are used in Andhra Pradesh. Small checks is a typical pattern of the state. The palla and the border of the sarees found here are richly decorated with gold and silver threads. In Venkatagiri sarees, images of aniamls, birds etc. are found. Pochampally sarees, which come with geometical patterns, are also popular.
Karnataka
Irkal is Karnataka's special saree. It comes in rich bright colors. Horizontal lines with matching colors covers the whole saree.
Kerala
Kerala sarees are plain and simple. The border and the palla of cotton sarees are decorated with zari work.
Manipur
There are two main woven designs of sarees in Manipur. There is likli (bottle design) and morang phee (temple designs on the border). Manipuri sarees have both embroidered and woven borders.
Varanasi
The silk sarees of Varanasi have very intricate and rich work. The patterns are made with colored threads, and gold and silver threads. You will love to have one in your wardrobe.
West Bengal
The speciality of Baluchari weaves is that it has a large pattern at the centre of the palla. It has designs running through the whole saree.
Tamil Nadu
Kanchipuram sarees are well known throughout India. These silk sarees have contrasting border and palla. They have a very sophisticated shine.
Orissa
Vichitrapuri sarees are Orissa's speciality. These sarees have geometrical designs and little temple designs on the border of the saree.
