Modak is a popular dessert from Maharashtra, prepared during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Modaks are Bhog/Prasad offered to Ganesh, as it’s a belief that Lord Ganesh loves eating Modak.
Today, we will prepare Poha Modak with general ingredients that are available in every kitchen. So, let’s get onto it.
Ingredients for Poha Modak:
Poha - 1 cup (70 grams)
Desi Ghee - 2 tsp
Almond - 1 tbsp, chopped
Cashews - 1 tbsp, chopped
Pistachio - 1 tbsp, chopped
Green Cardamom - 1/2 tsp
Milk - 1/2 liter, Full cream
Sugar - 1/2 Cup (100 grams)
Poha Modak Recipe:
To prepare Poha Modak, we will roast Poha first. Heat 1 tsp of ghee in a pan. Add 1 cup Poha to the pan once the ghee melts. You can use any kind of Poha. Do not roast the Poha too much.
Roast the Poha until the color changes slightly and becomes fragrant. Once done, transfer the roast Poha to a bowl and allow it to cool down.
Now, we will roast the dry fruits. Add ½ tsp of ghee to a pan. Once the ghee melts, add 1 tbsp of chopped almond, 1 tbsp of chopped Cashews, 1 tbsp of finely chopped Pistachios, and roast them briefly. Roast the dry fruits until they become fragrant.
Once done, transfer the dry fruits to a plate. Pour ½ liter full cream milk in the pan and bring it to a boil.
Add the roasted Poha to a mixer grinder and finely grind it. Transfer the ground Poha to a bowl.
Once the milk starts to boil, simmer it over high heat until thickened. Stir the milk at intervals. If you see Malai sticking to the sides of the pot, use a spatula to scrape them off.
When the Milk becomes thick enough, add ½ cup sugar. Add Poha powder to the pan after sugar dissolves completely. Mix well and turn the flame medium.
Cook the concoction over medium heat until it becomes thick like dough. Once it starts getting thicker, add the roasted dry fruits and ½ tsp of cardamom powder to the pan.
When the concoction is thick enough like a dough, take it out in a bowl and allow it to cool down. Start preparing Modak once the dough is cool enough to be touched with hands.
Take a Modak Mold and grease it with a little ghee and close it. Press the dough ball well inside the mold and even out the bottom and discard the extra dough. Unmould carefully and repeat the same with the rest of the dough.
Modak without using Mold:
Take a ball size dough and place it in your palm. Shape it in such a way that it is flat from the bottom and pointed from the top. With the help of a spoon draw lines on Modak.
We got 18 Modaks out of the prepared dough. Our Modak turned out so well. You can refrigerate the Modak and have them for 4-5 days.
